On Monday, October 24, students from Oneida Middle School enjoyed participating in General Electric’s Technology Day.  The event, held at the GE Power Campus, offered students the opportunity to not only get a behind the scenes look at some of the products manufactured on site,but actually take part in STEM activities first hand.

 Students learned about GE’s commitment to alternative energy sources, focusing on wind power and the production of wind turbines.  Students learned about the tremendous amounts of clean energy produced by the wind, and then proceeded through the scientific method to produce their own turbines from everyday objects.  

Students from Mrs. Fretto’s and Mrs. Deats’ seventh-grade science classes followed up with code-writing using Scratch and the Raspberry Pi computers.  Students all got an opportunity to write code that measured the amount of energy produced by a spinning motor. Finally, students got a hands-on look at energy transferred through conduction and convection, using their prior knowledge to formulate predictions about heat transfer.  

Students left excited and impressed about their trip to General Electric and all the products made there.  “It was awesome that we were able to actually make the things!”, one student commented.  Thanks to General Electric for a terrific day.
